PBA Signs Three-Year Deal with Carolier

The PBA announced today it has signed a three-year contract with Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., to serve as the host of the prestigious U.S. Open event, one of four majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour, for the next three seasons.

This year’s edition of the U.S. Open will be sponsored for the first time by Denny’s, which is entering its third season as the PBA Tour’s title sponsor. The 65th Denny’s U.S. Open will take place March 23-30 at Brunswick Zone Carolier and will serve as the season’s final event for the first time in the Tour’s 48-year history.

Brunswick Zone Carolier has been a loyal host of the Denny’s PBA Tour, playing host to an event in 14 of the last 16 seasons, including the last three U.S. Opens. The grueling six-day event features challenging lane conditions and a difficult format. The winner of the event is awarded $100,000 and a three-year Tour exemption.

Additionally, Brunswick Zone Carolier will host the 66th U.S. Open during the 2008-09 season, and the 67th U.S. Open in the 2009-10 season. The 2009-10 event will mark the sixth consecutive season the center has hosted the U.S. Open, which marks a PBA record.

“We are proud to call Brunswick Zone Carolier the home of the U.S. Open for the next three seasons,” PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer said. “The North Brunswick area is a strong bowling community and Brunswick Zone Carolier has been a great host to one of bowling’s most prestigious events. We’re very happy to know this event will be in good hands over the next three seasons.”

"We are pleased to continue our commitment to the PBA and the U.S. Open. Brunswick is honored to host the preeminent bowling event of the season," said Warren Hardie, president, Brunswick Bowling & Billiards.

With its long format and difficult lane conditions, the U.S. Open tends to bring out the best in the game of bowling as evidenced by the names that have hoisted the trophy the last few seasons. PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr. won the event in 2003 and ’04, respectively, while one of the game’s biggest stars, Chris Barnes, won the event in 2005 for his first career Major. Barnes defeated eventual 2004-05 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen in the title match that season at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

In 2006, Tommy Jones all but wrapped up his first career PBA Player of the Year award by winning the 63rd U.S. Open in North Brunswick for his first Major and eighth career title. Last season, Weber made history by winning his record-tying eighth career Major in the 64th U.S. Open, his record-tying fourth U.S. Open crown.
