HD vs HR Plug:
MOTIV HD is definitely the most popular ball plugging system, but we are often asked what HR hardener is for. Allow me to explain.
The HD epoxy system is the original and has been around since before reactive bowling balls were a thing. In fact, we invented HR hardener because of reactive coverstocks. They have an insulating effect and hold more heat during cure.
To ensure that you get the highest quality results with no concern of overheating, HR hardener was engineered to slow the cure and reduce heat. Cure time with HR hardener is 10-16 hours, while cure time is 5-8 hours with the standard HD hardener.
Notice I keep mentioning hardener. That’s because the resin is always the same. The original HD resin is used with either hardener components. This allows you to utilize HR hardener for oversized thumb holes or situations where you know overheating could be an issue, while using HD for your standard plug work. Or, if a 10-16 hour cure doesn’t hinder your process, you can just use HR hardener all the time.
PS: Helpful tip - Since we are starting a fresh bowling season, now is a great time to order a new set of pumps too. They are often the culprit when issues arise.
